The Zipp 303 S front wheel is designed for cyclists looking for a single wheel capable of performing on different terrains. Its intermediate 45 mm profile provides an aerodynamic advantage on the road while remaining light and manoeuvrable enough for hilly courses.
Its robust construction and compatibility with wide-section tyres also allow it to be used for gravel and cyclocross. It is therefore a particularly interesting solution for modern bikes intended for versatile use.
The rim is made of carbon with a unidirectional fibre finish, Bake-On markings, and a matte varnish. Its 45 mm height offers an effective balance between air penetration, stability, and weight.
Less exposed to wind than a 58 or 80 mm wheel, the 303 S remains relatively easy to control when conditions become changeable. It is therefore suitable for both daily training and competitions.
The 23 mm internal width provides suitable support for modern road and gravel tyres. It increases their air volume and allows for lower pressure without compromising cornering stability.
This configuration helps to reduce vibrations transmitted by poor road surfaces. The cyclist thus benefits from better comfort, enhanced grip, and more consistent performance on imperfect roads.
The Total System Efficiency technology, or TSE, aims to reduce the main sources of energy loss: aerodynamic drag, rolling resistance, weight, and vibrations.
This approach does not only seek performance in the wind tunnel. It also takes into account the conditions encountered on the road, where surface irregularities and tyre pressure can have a significant influence on speed.
The 303 S uses a Hookless rim, also known as Tubeless Straight Side. The absence of a hook allows for a more regular wall and a smoother transition between the tyre and the rim.
This wheel must be used exclusively with Hookless-compatible Tubeless or Tubeless Ready tyres. An inner tube can be installed inside a compatible Tubeless tyre, particularly for repairs, but a conventional Tubetype tyre must not be used.
Zipp indicates a minimum tyre width of 25 mm. The compatibility of the model and section must be checked in the official Zipp chart before mounting.
The maximum authorised pressure depends on the actual width of the tyre. For a 25 to 29 mm tyre, it must not exceed 5 bar. It is limited to 4.5 bar for 30 to 34 mm tyres and 4 bar for 35 to 39 mm sections.
These values are maximum limits and not systematic recommendations. The ideal pressure should be adjusted according to the cyclist's weight, the actual tyre width, the terrain, and the riding conditions.
The Zipp 76D front hub is based on steel cartridge bearings. Its simple and proven design prioritises reliability and facilitates maintenance operations.
The wheel uses 24 Sapim CX-Sprint spokes, crossed two times. The Sapim Secure-Loc brass nipples help maintain even tension and offer good resistance to prolonged use.
The hub accommodates a disc using the Center Lock standard. This system facilitates the installation and removal of the disc while ensuring its precise positioning on the hub.
The wheel is intended for a fork equipped with a 12 x 100 mm thru-axle. It is not directly compatible with a quick-release fork or the 15 x 110 mm MTB Boost standard.
The front wheel has a claimed weight of only 711 g, without rim tape or valve. This low weight favours acceleration and helps keep the bike dynamic on climbs.
The complete pair is claimed to weigh around 1,530 g in its lightest configuration. The 303 S thus offers a particularly interesting balance between performance, versatility, and accessibility within the Zipp range.
