The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 is a versatile hardtail mountain bike designed for progressing on the trails while maintaining enough comfort and practicality for leisure rides. Its Alpha Silver Aluminium frame, RockShox Judy Silver 100 mm air fork, SRAM Eagle 1x12-speed drivetrain, and dropper post provide a particularly complete set of features. Stable, accessible, and upgradeable, it is an excellent choice for seriously discovering mountain biking.
The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 is a hardtail mountain bike designed to offer an excellent compromise between affordability, versatility, and trail capability. More advanced than a simple recreational MTB, it features a modern geometry and components that allow you to start venturing onto more technical trails.
Its aluminium frame, RockShox air fork, SRAM Eagle single-chainring drivetrain, and dropper post make it a bike suitable for regular MTB rides, forest paths, and first trails, as well as daily commutes.
The Marlin 7 is built on an Alpha Silver Aluminium frame that combines robustness with weight management. Its geometry has been developed to provide more stability and confidence when the terrain becomes more technical.
Internal cable routing helps maintain a clean look while providing better protection for the housing.
Trek has also included mounts for a rack and kickstand. This means the Marlin can easily evolve from a weekend trail MTB to a versatile bike for daily commutes or touring.
At the front, the Marlin 7 is equipped with a RockShox Judy Silver fork offering 100 mm of travel.
Unlike a traditional coil fork, its Solo Air spring allows for more precise suspension tuning to the rider's weight.
The rebound adjustment allows you to fine-tune its behaviour, while the TurnKey hydraulic lockout is particularly useful on fast-rolling sections and climbs.
This gives the bike more control over roots, rocks, and uneven paths without unnecessarily compromising efficiency when the terrain becomes smoother.
The single-chainring drivetrain significantly simplifies the bike's operation.
The Marlin 7 combines a SRAM SX Eagle shifter with a SRAM NX Eagle 12-speed rear derailleur. The SRAM SX Eagle crankset has a 30-tooth chainring, paired with a SRAM PG-1210 cassette offering a range of 11 to 50 teeth.
This combination provides a gear low enough to tackle steep climbs while eliminating the front derailleur and its shifter.
The result is a simple-to-use drivetrain, particularly suited for mountain biking, offering a wide enough gear range to handle very different terrains.
The inclusion of a TranzX dropper post is one of the real strengths of the Marlin 7.
It allows you to quickly lower the saddle from the cockpit before a descent or a technical section. This gives the rider more freedom of movement over the bike and allows them to shift their centre of gravity more easily.
This is a particularly valuable feature for improving your technical skills and gaining confidence on the trails.
Braking is handled by Shimano MT200 hydraulic brakes.
They offer progressive operation and easily controllable power, regardless of weather conditions.
Shimano RT26 rotors complete the setup, with diameters adapted to the different frame sizes.
The double-wall Bontrager Kovee rims have an internal width of 23 mm and are Tubeless Ready compatible.
They are paired with Maxxis Rekon 2.40-inch tyres, which are also Tubeless Ready, with an EXO casing and a folding bead.
The Rekon offers an interesting compromise between efficiency, traction, and grip for versatile trail/XC use.
Sizes XS and S use 27.5-inch wheels to maintain a well-proportioned and manoeuvrable bike for smaller riders.
From size M upwards, the Marlin 7 switches to 29-inch wheels. Their rollover capability and momentum promote stability and efficiency on the trails.
The Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 positions itself as an excellent intermediate between a recreational MTB and more specialised models.
It is particularly suitable for riders who want to start mountain biking seriously with a bike that is well-equipped enough to support their progression. The air fork, 2.40-inch tyres, single-chainring drivetrain, and especially the dropper post allow you to tackle real MTB trails.
Its accessory mounts further broaden its range of use for touring and daily commutes.
In its Fury Red Fade finish, the Marlin 7 adopts a particularly dynamic red colour that highlights the sporty character of this third generation.
