Discover mountain biking with the Trek Marlin 4 3rd generation, a versatile hardtail bike designed for first trail rides, sporty outings, and daily commutes. Its Alpha Silver Aluminium frame adopts a modern geometry that provides stability and confidence on the trails. The Shimano ESSA 1x8-speed single-chainring drivetrain simplifies gear changes, while the hydraulic disc brakes ensure effective control. Its mounts for a rack and kickstand also allow it to be equipped for the city or commuting to work.
The Trek Marlin 4 3rd generation is an accessible hardtail MTB, designed to accompany cyclists on their first off-road rides. Its stable and reassuring geometry makes it easy to handle on forest tracks, rolling paths, and less technical trails.
Its versatility also allows it to be used for leisure, daily commutes, or trips to work. The integrated mounts allow for the installation of a kickstand and a rack to easily adapt the bike for urban use.
The Alpha Silver Aluminium frame offers an excellent compromise between strength, stiffness, and weight management. The internal cable routing protects the drivetrain while maintaining a clean look.
The frame is also compatible with the subsequent installation of a dropper post. This upgrade potential is a real advantage for cyclists who want to gradually tackle more technical trails.
In size XS, the curved top tube improves standover clearance and makes it easier to get on and off the bike.
The SR Suntour XCE 28 suspension fork uses a coil spring and offers preload adjustment. It absorbs shocks and irregularities encountered on the trails to improve comfort and bike control.
The travel is adapted to the frame size: size XS has 80 mm, while sizes S to XXL have 100 mm. This configuration ensures a balanced position and handling regardless of the rider's height.
The Smart Wheel Size technology pairs each frame size with the most appropriate wheel diameter. Sizes XS and S are equipped with 27.5-inch wheels, which are more manoeuvrable and better suited for smaller riders.
Sizes M to XXL use 29-inch wheels. Their larger diameter makes it easier to roll over obstacles, improves stability, and helps maintain speed more easily on rolling sections.
The Marlin 4 features a Shimano ESSA 1x8-speed drivetrain. The absence of a front derailleur simplifies gear shifting and allows the rider to focus more on steering.
The 30-tooth narrow-wide chainring helps keep the chain on over rough trails. It is paired with a Shimano HG300 cassette with an 11-45 tooth range, which offers a gear range suitable for hilly rides and off-road climbs.
Hydraulic disc brakes provide more power and progressiveness than traditional mechanical brakes. Their operation requires little effort and makes it easier to control speed on trails, on descents, and when the terrain becomes wet.
The smaller sizes use Tektro HD-M276 levers adapted to their ergonomics. The other sizes are equipped with Tektro HD-M275 brakes. The discs measure 160 or 180 mm depending on the frame size.
The 2.40-inch Bontrager Montrose Comp tyres offer significant volume and a generous contact patch. They help improve grip, comfort, and stability on dry or loose trails.
The double-wall Bontrager Connection rims enhance the overall reliability. They use Schrader valves, which are easy to inflate with a standard pump or a compressor available at a service station.
The wide aluminium handlebar provides control in corners and on rough sections. Its width varies from 690 to 750 mm depending on the bike size to maintain consistent ergonomics.
The short stem enhances manoeuvrability and complements the Marlin's modern geometry. The Trek Line Comp Lock-On grips stay correctly positioned during effort.
The frame has mounts for a rack and kickstand. The Marlin 4 can thus be equipped with panniers for daily commutes, shopping, or day trips.
Nylon flat pedals are included with the bike. The cyclist can therefore use it immediately without having to buy an extra pair of pedals.
| Trek Size | Frame Size | Wheels | Rider Height | Inseam |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 14.5 inch | 27.5 inch | 145 to 155 cm | 69 to 73 cm |
| S | 15.5 inch | 27.5 inch | 155 to 165 cm | 74 to 78 cm |
| M | 17.5 inch | 29 inch | 165 to 177 cm | 79 to 83 cm |
| ML | 18.5 inch | 29 inch | 173 to 180 cm | 81 to 86 cm |
| L | 19.5 inch | 29 inch | 177 to 188 cm | 84 to 89 cm |
| XL | 21.5 inch | 29 inch | 188 to 195 cm | 89 to 91 cm |
| XXL | 23 inch | 29 inch | 195 to 203 cm | 91 to 97 cm |
Sizes M, ML, and L have overlapping ranges. If in doubt, a smaller size will generally favour manoeuvrability, while a larger size will provide a more stretched-out position and more stability. A test ride in-store is still recommended.
The Trek Marlin 4 3rd generation is an excellent first MTB for discovering the trails without giving up daily use. We appreciate its very simple single-chainring drivetrain, its hydraulic brakes, and its reassuring geometry. The wheels adapted to each size are also a real advantage. Its fork is intended for leisure use, but the upgradable frame will allow a dropper post to be added later.
