Discover road cycling with the Trek Domane AL 2 4th generation. Its lightweight Alpha Aluminium frame and full carbon fork offer reassuring and comfortable handling for regular rides as well as long distances. The 16-speed Shimano Claris drivetrain provides gearing suitable for hilly routes, while the 32 mm tyres enhance grip and filter out irregularities. Versatile, it also accepts tyres up to 38 mm and various accessories.
The Trek Domane AL 2 4th generation is aimed at cyclists who want to discover road cycling with a comfortable, reliable and upgradeable bike. Its reassuring handling allows you to focus on the pleasure of riding, without imposing the very low position of a bike designed exclusively for competition.
It is suitable for first sporty rides, regular training, gran fondos and long rides. Its numerous mounting points also allow it to be equipped for daily commutes or multi-day adventures.
The Domane's endurance geometry places the cyclist in a more upright and less demanding position than that of a traditional racing bike. This posture reduces tension in the back, neck and shoulders during long rides.
Nevertheless, the bike maintains a sufficiently sporty behaviour to accelerate, ride in a group and progress. It is therefore a coherent entry point into the world of road cycling for a beginner, but also a versatile solution for a cyclist who prioritises comfort.
The frame is made of 100 Series Alpha Aluminium. Trek uses profiled and assembled tubes to achieve a good balance between stiffness, strength and weight control.
Internal cable routing improves the bike's aesthetics and protects part of the housing from spray. The tapered head tube enhances front-end precision, while the thru-axles stabilise the wheels during changes of direction and braking.
The Domane AL fork is made of carbon with a tapered carbon steerer. It helps to reduce the bike's weight and dampen some of the vibrations generated by uneven road surfaces.
It integrates the brake hose routing and uses a 12 x 100 mm thru-axle. Mounts also allow for the installation of a compatible mudguard for more comfortable riding when the roads are wet.
The Domane AL 2 is equipped with a mechanical Shimano Claris 2 x 8-speed drivetrain. The integrated shifters allow you to change gears while keeping your hands on the handlebars or in the immediate vicinity of the brake levers.
The Claris groupset offers simple and reliable operation, particularly suited to a first experience of road cycling. Its components are widely available and relatively easy to maintain or replace.
The Shimano RS200 compact crankset combines 50 and 34-tooth chainrings. It is complemented by an eight-speed Shimano HG31 cassette, with a range of 11 to 32 teeth.
The large chainring allows you to maintain a sustained speed on the flat and on descents. The 34-tooth small chainring combined with the 32-tooth sprocket offers an accessible gear for climbing hills, although a cyclist looking for very low gears for high mountains may prefer a more generous cassette.
The Tektro C550 dual-piston mechanical disc brakes offer progressive and consistent braking whatever the weather conditions. The 160 mm discs provide power suitable for sporty and versatile use.
Their cable actuation facilitates maintenance and limits the cost of servicing. However, they require more force at the levers and offer less fine modulation than hydraulic disc brakes.
The Bontrager Paradigm 23 aluminium wheels prioritise reliability and versatility. They use 12 x 100 mm thru-axles at the front and 12 x 142 mm at the rear to ensure precise positioning in the frame.
The bike is equipped with Bontrager Kwaremont Comp Hard-Case Lite tyres in 700 x 32C. Their volume provides more comfort, grip and stability than very narrow road tyres.
The frame and fork accept tyres up to 38 mm wide, subject to respecting Trek's recommendations and the necessary space around the tyre. This compatibility allows the bike to be adapted to the terrain and the desired level of comfort.
With appropriate tyres, the Domane AL 2 can occasionally leave the tarmac to take on hard-packed paths or non-technical gravel tracks. However, it does not replace a real gravel bike on rough, loose or very muddy terrain.
The Bontrager Comp aluminium handlebar offers several positions to vary hand placement during the ride. The Bontrager Elite stem is compatible with the Blendr system, which facilitates the clean installation of a computer, a light or other compatible accessories.
The handlebar width and stem length are adapted to the frame size to offer a consistent position across the entire range.
The Bontrager Verse Short Comp saddle has a short profile that facilitates pelvic rotation and allows you to find a stable position on the bike. It rests on steel rails that prioritise robustness.
The 27.2 mm diameter Bontrager Comp seatpost offers slight vertical compliance. The saddle can naturally be replaced if its shape does not suit the cyclist's morphology or position.
The Domane AL 2 has mounts for installing mudguards, a rear rack, bottle cages and a top tube bag. This equipment capacity considerably expands its range of use.
It can thus serve as a training bike, a ride for fast commutes, a light touring bike or a platform for a first bike-packing experience.
The frame uses a UDH standard derailleur hanger. This widely used format makes it easy to find a replacement part in case of impact or deformation.
The adoption of this standard also improves the frame's longevity and simplifies certain maintenance operations compared to a specific hanger that is more difficult to find.
The Matte Dark Star Black colour combines a matte black finish with a discreet and sporty aesthetic. It highlights the clean lines of the frame and easily matches accessories of different colours.
A matte paint should be cleaned with a soft cloth and a non-abrasive product. Polishing products or those containing silicone should be avoided so as not to create shiny areas.
The quality of the frame, the carbon fork, the thru-axles and the generous clearance allow the Domane AL 2 to be progressively upgraded. Better tyres are generally the first relevant improvement to gain efficiency and grip.
The wheels, drivetrain or cockpit can also be replaced as needed. Before undertaking major modifications, however, it will be useful to compare their cost with that of a higher-end model already equipped with a more advanced drivetrain and hydraulic brakes.
To take full advantage of the comfort and stability of the Trek Domane AL 2, choose the frame size based on your height and inseam length.
| Frame Size | Rider Height | Inseam |
|---|---|---|
| 44 | 150 to 153 cm | 71 to 73 cm |
| 49 | 156 to 163 cm | 74 to 77 cm |
| 52 | 163 to 168 cm | 76 to 79 cm |
| 54 | 168 to 174 cm | 78 to 82 cm |
| 56 | 174 to 180 cm | 81 to 85 cm |
| 58 | 180 to 185 cm | 84 to 87 cm |
| 61 | 185 to 190 cm | 86 to 90 cm |
The Trek Domane AL 2 4th generation is an excellent first bike to discover road cycling without suffering from a too demanding position. We appreciate its full carbon fork, its 32 mm tyres and its ability to accommodate accessories or wider tyres. The Claris drivetrain is simple and reliable. However, the mechanical brakes require more effort than hydraulic models, especially on long descents.
