There are different types of filling for sleeping bags. They have a major influence on bag performance. Being cold when camping or bivouacking can quickly make your outdoor adventure unbearable. To make the right choice, you need to know the characteristics of the upholstery. Lepape explains.

Sleeping bag: feather and down filling

The filling is the material inside the sleeping bag. Natural down fillings are usually made from duck or goose down.

Description and features

The main feature of a natural down and feather filling is its thermal insulation capacity, which keeps the inside of the bag warm. Another factor explains this heat conservation. The swelling power of feathers and down, which trap air, keeps you warm.

Lepape tips for buying your sleeping bag:

  • Look at the indicated swelling power, measured in CUIN. The higher the value, the better the insulation.
  • Look at the feather/down ratio. The more down, the warmer and lighter the sleeping bag.

Advantages of natural filling

  • Better thermal insulation
  • Warmer
  • Lighter
  • Longer service life
  • More compressible (space-saving)
  • More comfortable (lightness and loft)

Disadvantages of sleeping bags with natural filling

Despite its many advantages, this type of bag also has some negative points that are important to know:

  • Hydrophilic appearance: absorbs water easily (not recommended for use in damp areas).
  • Maintenance required and long drying time
  • More expensive than synthetic sleeping bags

Note: hydrophobic down is now available, i.e. down impregnated with products that offer greater resistance to humidity.

Sleeping bags: synthetic fiber filling

The choice of synthetic sleeping bag can be the right one, depending on where you’re going to spend your night outdoors, the temperature etc.

Description and features

A synthetic sleeping bag is by definition a bag that is not filled with natural down. The filling is made of synthetic fibers. These fibers can be solid (better resistance), hollow (better insulation) or spiral (increased comfort).

The advantages of synthetic sleeping bags

  • Hydrophobic: low water absorption
  • Easy care and quick drying
  • Often lower prices

The disadvantages of synthetic fibre sleeping bags

  • Less optimal thermal insulation
  • Less compressibility: more bulky
  • Greater weight
  • Lower swelling power: moderate service life

As you can see, the choice of a sleeping bag is mainly based on its composition. So it’s important to know its features so you can make the right choice for the conditions in which you’ll be using it. Because a good night’s sleep is essential to a successful camping or bivouac experience!
