Crampons are essential for safe mountaineering in high altitudes or on icy slopes. They attach to the bottom of your boots, giving you better grip on snow and ice.

They provide extra stability for winter outings or long expeditions at altitude. Mountain crampons are a simple but essential tool for feeling comfortable and safe on long walks in slippery conditions.

Two categories of mountain crampons

Trail/Hiking

Ideal for short hikes and white trails.

The crampons are attached to normal trail or hiking boots by means of a flexible reinforcement on the upper side. A chain with small spikes (10, 12 or 13) forms the lower part.

Lightweight and sturdy, these steel studs provide excellent grip while remaining invisible on your feet! Ideal for white trails or the SaintéLyon in sub-zero temperatures, for example.

Mountaineering

For progression on névés, glaciers or icefalls

Cleats are stiffer, more resistant and designed for more demanding activities. The main differentiating criteria are fastening systems and tips.

Stud fastening system

Strap fastener

Versatile and lightweight, these extra crampons can be fitted to any boot for hikes or trails with little alpine involvement (mid-mountain), but with the possibility of encountering névés when crossing passes (particularly at the start of the season). These are the models to go for on a TMB or GR20 in May, for example.

This versatile fastening system is called Strap at Black Diamond and Flexlock from Petzl.

Semi-automatic fastening

Requires a suitable pair of shoes, with rear overhang, but simple to install, lightweight, efficient and highly reliable. The most widespread system, this type of binding is suitable for medium and high-mountain riders, who therefore have a very stable shoe, but not a rigid outsole. It allows you to evolve on difficult terrain, but where foot roll remains a priority. This fastening system is called Leverlock Universal from Petzl and Clip from Black Diamond

Automatic fastening

This system requires a pair of rigid shoes with front and rear overhangs (cramponable shoes). It ensures greater precision for mountaineers engaged in high-altitude glacier trekking or ice climbing.

Here, Petzl has the Leverlock Fil system, and Black Diamond’s Pro system.

Crampons et Pointes

The more spikes a spike has (from less than 10 to 13), the more technical its use.

Lightweight aluminum crampons. Perfect for occasional use in mid-mountain conditions. They can be taken out of the pack when needed (e.g. when crossing névé).

Steel crampons are heavier but very durable. Ideal for glacier trekking, where you need to keep your crampons on while walking, even on rocky terrain. Hence the need for a sturdy material.

Flat tips

they offer greater lift in snow but are more fragile, making them suitable for classic mountaineering.

Serrated tips

This type of tip provides better grip and is more resistant and rigid. It offers better penetration in hard ice.

Single-tip

These mountaineering crampons feature a unique front point. Some climbers prefer the precision of a single front tip when ice climbing or on vertical slopes.

For the front points, they are perpendicular for ice climbing (to sink into the wall) and point downwards for other practices.

Focus on the AlpenAdapt system – Petzl

All Petzl crampons offer the option of changing the fastening system to fit all shoes, with or without overhangs. The front blocks and heels can also be modulated to meet the specific needs of the race envisaged.

Three types of fasteners (Flexlock/Lerverlock Fil and Leverlock Universel) allow crampons to be fitted to all types of boots,
whether they have thick, thin or no edges. Link bars can be
set by half-step, without tools.
